On Fiction and Podcasts and Trying New Things

Hello, Friends!

One of my favorite things about the Lord is that He’s always doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:19). He’s infinitely creative, so he never runs out of ideas!

I, on the other hand, like to get myself nice and comfortable in a warm, little rut. If I enjoy something, I keep at it. And if something’s hard at first, I tend to shy away. A couple of years ago, however, I felt a nudge to do something a little different, to venture out into unknown territory.

While my main focus will always be writing about God and His Word, I wanted to do something that explored my love of story, so I set out to write a bit of fiction. What I ended up with was the first in a trilogy of sci-fi novels aimed at young adults. The first book comes out from Moody Publishers on May 6, and it’s called The Unlikely Intrusion of Adams Klein. Here’s the synopsis:

Are some things in life worth taking a stand for, no matter the cost?

Fourteen-year-old Adams Klein lives by one simple rule: Don’t do anything that might change the course of history. To protect him from a murderous tyrant, Adams was hidden away in the early twenty-first century. A refugee from the distant future, his existence is a secret. But when he witnesses a tragedy unfolding, he can’t stand by and do nothing. Now history is being changed, and Adams and his new friends are being hunted by a villain who’ll stop at nothing to retain his iron grip on the world of the future, even if it means destroying the past.

It’s now available for pre-order, so I hope you’ll check it out. While it’s being marketed toward middle-grade readers and young adults, it really is a story for grown-ups too—and of course, there are biblical allusions and echoes of the gospel throughout!

Another new thing I’m trying is a podcast. I realize not everyone has time to sit down and read a book or even a blog post, so I’ve decided to step out into the podcast realm like it’s 2007.

I’m calling it the Pages of Joy Audio Devotional. Each episode will be about five minutes long—some longer and some shorter—and will focus on God’s good heart in the pages of Scripture. If you like the blog content on this site, you’ll probably enjoy the podcast. Here’s the trailer:

Finally, as you may know, I have a children’s book out called The Easter Lamb. We are in the home stretch, as there are only a few days left to purchase the book before Easter, so if you haven’t yet, please do. Also, if you’ve read the book and have not yet left a review on Amazon, please do so. Those star ratings and reviews help other people to find the book. In a world with few physical bookstores to browse, those pesky algorithms control an awful lot! (And if you have reviewed the book, thank you, thank you, thank you!)

I recently got the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Danny Huerta and Rebecca St. James—yes, that Rebecca St. James—to talk about the book on their Practice Makes Parent podcast. If you want to know more about my heart behind writing The Easter Lamb, please check it out.

Whew! I think that’s about it.

Thank you for reading (and listening)!
