Read Philippians 1:12–20.
“But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.” (Philippians 1:18)
Social media has changed the way we interact with our culture. When something happens—be it a national news story or some issue within the church—people from every corner of the globe get to weigh in, opining in short bursts of righteous indignation or celebratory agreement.
While it can be interesting to hear from many different perspectives, being inundated by constant hot takes from self-appointed cultural referees can be exhausting. There’s something in our sinful nature that draws us into a spirit of tribalism. We want to know who’s on our team and who’s not, who agrees with us and who doesn’t, who’s a genuine believer and who’s a flat-out heretic—as though a tweet or a reel about a current event could reveal a person’s heart.
We live in a divided and hostile age. Social media isn’t the only factor, of course, but it’s probably not helping most of us. That’s why I find it so interesting that Paul, in speaking about men who “preach Christ out of envy and rivalry” (Philippians 1:15), concludes that his chief concern is that “Christ is preached” (v. 18). It’s a sobering reminder that our goal, as we interact with the world, is not to surround ourselves with people who always think just like we do; rather it’s to be a part of what God is accomplishing through His church.
There are likely well-known Christian leaders, pastors, and Bible teachers with whom you disagree on certain issues—maybe even important ones. Just remember that complete and total agreement is not what brings unity. Jesus is. So delight that the gospel is being preached by people with whom you disagree. Celebrate that souls are being saved through the preaching and teaching of people whose motives might not be what they should be. The most important this is that Jesus is being proclaimed!
