Walking in the Light

I’m blessed to work from home. That means I get to spend time with my family during business hours, when most other dads are stuck at the office. Our normal routine has us taking a walk around our neighborhood in the early afternoon to stretch our legs, soak up some much-needed vitamin D, and breathe in a bit of fresh air. These are sweet times to talk and laugh and just enjoy each other’s company.

We don’t take these afternoon walks the whole year long though. From about mid-July through mid-September, it’s just too hot here in the South, where we live. The sun is fierce, and it’s simply not enjoyable to be out in the middle of the day. In the summer, we’ll take evening strolls under the blessed relief of darkened skies. Night is more comfortable, even if it’s harder to see where we’re going.

Sadly, there are many people who’ve grown comfortable living in spiritual darkness. Their sin has become such a way of life that they imagine the light of truth will be more than they can bear. So they remain where they are, comfortable in the dark. But in truth, they need light—we all do. Without the truth about ourselves, this world, and the God who loves us, we’ll never discover the freedom and joy we were created to know in our Father’s presence.

That’s why God gave us the holy Scriptures. In the pages of God’s Word, there is light to help us out of the darkness: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). This world is a dark place, so we need a lantern to find our way back home to the Father who created us in His image. The Bible tells us how to live here on earth, but more importantly, it tells us about Jesus, who died in our place so that our citizenship can be transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.
